Is University Essential

John Ross reported in Australian (Higher Ed Supplement) pg 3, 20/6/16....

"Survey Produces Surprise Income Results"

Results from a survey of graduates out of Curtin University, indicated that men with PhD's made 23% less income than those with a bachelors degree. Nurses were shown to earn more than lawyers.

There was caution that the survey was limited and to not be taken as excessively serious; however, this is only one of many such worrying surveys that have appeared in recent years in Australia, England and elsewhere.

Quote from our principal (John Mason):

Last month, while visiting the UK, I read a report in a major UK newspaper that indicated the majority of university graduates surveyed from a group of recent graduates, were not working in their chosen discipline, but instead, were employed in menial jobs such as "cleaning" or working in restaurants, coffee shops and fast food outlets. Last year, I saw a report from a major university that five years after graduation, only 10% of students from science degrees were working in science"

Despite such reports, we continue to see the majority of our graduates finding great success in careers, or business; applying the knowledge and skills they have learned here at ACS.

We are not so smug as to think this is because we teach people so much better than a university; but clearly there is more to being successful than just getting a qualification; and it is not the qualification at the end of the day that makes you really successful. You need to focus more on the learning.

Learn what you need for the job at hand, and you will succeed more at the job you undertake.

It is important to focus on matching your learning needs to what you actually study. Getting the right match up is what is important.  The reason these surveys are showing so many problems may simply be because too many people are not matching their studies properly with their needs.

Maybe you do need a university education. Maybe all you need is a couple of the short courses on this site. Maybe you need both, or something in between.
