Eight Things You Should Always Do for Cyber security.
There are things that should be done when setting up any internet-connected network. Such measures make it harder for outsiders to access your networks and connected devices.
Securing the hardware and software of routers, modems and other devices should be done as soon as, or before, you connect to the internet.
1. Change Router Settings. Routers typically come with default settings. These must be changed. Default permissions render you an easy target for hackers. Changing permissions prevents outsiders from accessing the router and setting permissions to allow outside access. It also reduces the likelihood of their changing settings and locating specific machines on the network.
2. Turn on the operating system or software/application firewall if available
3. Install antivirus software if available, setting it to constantly monitor for threats
4. Configure your web browser's security settings and ensuring it is compatible with your anti-virus software and other security software.
5. Limit or disable sharing on the network between the device and other devices
6. Keep device firmware and software up to date, using automatic updates
7. Schedule automatic backups to an offsite and off-network location.
8. Turn off any thing that can connect to the network or other devices that may not be needed, i.e. Bluetooth connectivity, location services.
